AGA Kizer Tournament Planning. - Tumblemind Writing

I am planning my second tournament since the collarbone break hiatus. Everything about this tournament is trying to get to a low nineties or better score. This blog is written to outline the plan I hope to execute to get to the lower score.

In my Scoring Method (SM) Facebook page I posted my most recent round of 101 at Avery Ranch. I mentioned the desire to break 90 in this post and a fellow SM member sent a link to this “Break 90” youtube video: “How to Break 90 if You Never Have” by “golf sidekick”. I have seen several “Break 90” videos and this qualifies as one of the best. He outlines choosing 5 clubs that will do the job with the goal of being extremely confident in using each. Prior to seeing the video I had chosen to play at least three rounds using only 5 clubs – 3-hybrid, 6-iron, 8-iron, 52° Gap Wedge, and Putter. I played Avery Ranch with these last week with the result of a 101. I had 4 blow-up holes but otherwise played a reasonable round.

For the Roy Kizer Austin Golf Association tournament round I plan to play a round where I keep the stress as low as possible. I will play with only the 3-hybrid, 6-iron down to PW, GW, SW and putter. Where possible I will only play with the 5 clubs mentioned previously. However. as this is a tournament round, I decided that I am comfortable enough with my irons and how far I hit them that I will choose the best iron for the situation. In particular, adding the Sand Wedge to the mix helps as I don’t have the confidence in the GW out of bunkers as I do the SW.

So what is the Kizer AGA plan? Stress free golf. On most par 4’s and par 5’s I will hit the 3-hybrid off the tee. According to Game Golf, I am averaging 179 off the tee and 165 off the deck with the 3-hybrid. But for planning purposes, I am assuming a stress free 170 off the tee. I typically hit my 6-iron 140 yards off the deck. For any par 4 under 310, I expect and hope I can hit GIR with two well struck shots. If I have 150 to the green I plan to hit 6-iron and either hit the green or be just short of green. In the spirit of stress-free golf though, anything more than 150 I plan to split into 8-iron, wedge for stress free bogey if I can get a two-putt from the wedge shot. For par 5’s it’s either 3H, 3H, or 3H, 6-iron for the layup and whatever comfortable shot to green or split into two if greater than 150 yards left to green.

If one attempts to play a round of golf with a score in mind, disaster results. I have a hard time with this because I want to break 90 and know I have the capability to break 90. For this round, I’d be really happy to score below 95. Blow-up holes have been my nemesis and I have had one 18 hole round without any trips or worse, so it is in me to go the distance without blow-ups. I hope a stress-free AGA round at Kizer will get me there.
