Golf – Scoring Method friendly Youtube Channel Review

First review - golf sidekick youtube channel

As I have mentioned and linked in previous posts, I get a lot of information to improve my golf from youtube. There are several channels I watch that provide information that matches my philosophy of a dynamic swing. However, The Scoring Method teaches you how to improve your golf score without having to change your swing. Finding a youtube channel that directly supports that scoring emphasis is rather difficult because most golf youtube gurus are trying to fix some aspect of your swing.

When researching the topic “how to break 90” I stumbled upon a video that directly addresses that topic with shot-by-shot play including tips to achieve the goal. This relatively new channel, “Golf Sidekick” has several such videos and the “Break X” videos especially adhere to The Scoring Method thought process with regular folks. As an added entertainment value, the venue and courses are in Thailand and it’s fun to watch the caddies provided for the rounds. Matt, the author, provides a bit of comedy about the delightful caddies in a couple of videos as well.

The production is well done and he uses graphics to overlay or interleave tips during the round. Shot tracer is used on some shots and he discusses using your shot shape to keep the ball in play. In addition he has a web page with blog posts that match the philosophy of youtube channel. His Golf Sidekick web page is pretty, simple, and nice to navigate.

Top Three to watch

The best Scoring Method compatible video is the “How to break 90 in Golf shot-by-shot“. Matt himself appears to be a very low handicap player, but in this video he plays to break 90 with the methodology he provides in his blog article. Basically, like Scoring Method, he plays with one go-to club, two reliable irons for layups and approaches, a wedge, and a putter. Simple 5 club golf will get you to breaking 90 with methodical, keep-the-ball-in-play style. I especially like and have adopted the long approach split tips. Matt recommends if you’ve got 200-ish yards to the green, hit two wedges to take the stress out. (I split 200 yards into an 8-iron and wedge to put it to my perfect 3/4 Gap Wedge distance.)

If you want proof positive that you can have “game” with your own swing, the two part videos “How to Break 80 with an everyday swing” shows a fellow, Didi, who has the funkiest swing I’ve seen in my life. BUT, he shoots to a 7 handicap! He hits a cut and plays to that. He’s also a deadly chipper club wielder and another reason I decided to give the Cleveland Smartsole 3C a try. Watching him gives me great confidence that I can break 90 and eventually 80 in the not too distant future.

In addition to the educational value, Matt also displays a sense of humor in several of his videos and his video on “How I Turned 90 into 81…” is a perfect example of both education and humor in a video. “C’mon, Matt, think!” introduces a tip on how he should have played a particular chip better. And on the humor side, his singing (or whomever’s) lends fun to his caddy adoration.

If you want some great material on breaking 100, 90, 80 or just some good fun golf entertainment, go check out the Golf Sidekick Youtube channel!
